An Itinerary in Snaps: Naturalistic Photography in Marcigliana

Sunday 12th November 2006

Appointment at 10.00 a.m. in Via di Tor S.Giovanni, 301
Guided visit with introduction to naturalistic photography in Marcigliana Nature Reserve. Times and snaps, looking for the best stop. Digital photography: shadows and lights.
In case of rain, the course will be held inside the Casa del Parco.
Booking recommended.

  • Activity lasting about two hours and a half
  • Difficulty of the route: easy
  • Accessible trail for disabled people and prams.

On the occasion of the European Day of Parks that will be held on 24th May, RomaNatura promotes a series of appointments taking place in its protected areas. They are all dedicated to biodiversity, according to the theme of the Day promoted by Federparchi and want to represent a contribution to the international initiative called "Countdown 2010". A calendar going from May and June to October, rich in guided visits, night tours, seminars, environmental toy library for children to discover the biodiversity heritage of the protected areas of Rome.

  • Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th May
    "A Small Natural Chemist's Shop with the Spontaneous Herbs of the Parks of Rome"
    in Riserva Naturale della Valle dei Casali
    Two-day course open to everyone dealing with the recognition and use of the spontaneous herbs of the natural parks of the city. Small tricks, many recipes, a lot of information to take care of your body in a natural way. The course is held by professors of Scuola Superiore di Naturopatia.
    • Appointment at Casa del Parco, via del Casaletto 400.
    • The course will take place from 9.30 a.m. to 1.00 p.m. and from 2.00 p.m. to 5.30 p.m.

  • Saturday 6th May
    "The Night Singing of Birds" and "Environmental Toy Library"
    in Riserva Naturale della Tenuta dei Massimi
    Night guided visit to Bosco Somaini in Tenuta dei Massimi Nature Reserve. An area of great environmental value situated within the beltway of Rome, where Kites nest and there are precious wetlands rich in biodiversity.
    • Appointment at 7.00 p.m. in Vecchia Locanda dei Massimi - via Portuense 863.
    • Booking recommended.
    • For children: Environmental Toy Library for children from 4 to 10 years of age, from 3.00 p.m.- to 7.00 p.m.

  • Sunday 7th May
    "Iris in Bloom in Cervelletta between Flowers and Hidden Inhabitants"
    in Riserva Naturale della Valle dell'Aniene
    The sanctuary of Cervelletta, a wetland in Colli Aniene, towards the end of April becomes a yellow plain due to Iris blooming. This water plant is now rare because of the destruction of wetlands but can be observed and admired in Cervelletta. During the guided visit it will also be possible to sight reptiles and amphibians: newts, common tree frogs and, if we are lucky, the rare European frogs.
    At the end of the visit, there will be a snack in the open air in Casale della Cervelletta.

  • Saturday 13th May
    "Let's Find them: The Mammals in our Reserves"
    in Parco Regionale Urbano di Aguzzano
    Guided visit to discover the traces and various signs the different species leave: tracks, hair, rest of meals. Along the trail it will also be possible to recognize the calls of the animals populating the protected area, precious green lung in the eastern outskirts of Rome.

  • Sunday 14th May
    "Unusual Archaeology: Nature in the Historical Sites"
    in Monumento Naturale di Galeria Antica
    Guided visit to one of the most evocative dead towns of Lazio, situated at about twenty kilometers in the north of Rome. The archaeological sites represent important areas for biodiversity conservation, since they are places where insects and small mammals can find shelter and places of passage for migratory species.

The European Day of Parks
  • Sunday 21st May
    "Bird Watching: Observation and Recognition of Birds in the Sky of Rome"
    in Riserva Naturale della Marcigliana
    Just outside the beltway of Rome, in Marcigliana Reserve - the second largest protected area of the system managed by RomaNatura, you can observe several forest species of birds like Buzzards, Woodpeckers, and Tits. Moreover, in spring the area is interested by a considerable migratory flow of Passeriformes, with Shrikes, Leaf Warblers, and Flycatchers.

    "Roman Butterflies"
    in Riserva Naturale dell'Insugherata
    Introductory visit to butterfly watching in the reserve of Rome housing still today most of the butterflies which were once widespread in the Roman Countryside.

Villa Mazzanti
  • Saturday 10th June
    "The Wonderful Performance by Nature: The Dance of the fireflies and the Concert of the Nightingales"
    in Riserva Naturale di Decima Malafede
    Night tour to discover the wildlife of the Reserve, which is the largest protected area of Rome. Surrounded by the fragrances of lime trees and hay characterizing the Roman countryside, it will be possible to discover the secrets and now rare dances of the fireflies and the singing of the nightingales. Possibility to meet porcupines, badgers, foxes, and nocturnal birds of prey.
    • Adequate clothes and shoes are recommended.

  • Sunday 11th June
    "The Garden of Villa Mazzanti: Flora, Villa, and Landscape"
    in Riserva Naturale di Monte Mario
    A route to discover the home of a middle-class richman of the 19th century, between the eclectic architecture and the romantic landscape of an English garden combining exotic vegetation and autochthonous species, and the charming panorama of the town. The villa currently houses the headquarters of RomaNatura.

    "The Fascinating World of Mushrooms"
    in Riserva Naturale di Decima Malafede
    Guided visit to discover hundreds of multicolor species forming the mushroom flora of the Reserve. During the visit, the main species will be described, as well as their edibility and rules for gathering and consumption.

  • Sunday 22nd October
    "Autumn in the Reserve" The Parks at Table
    - Riserva Naturale di Decima Malafede
    Day dedicated to the agricultural and food products of the parks of RomaNatura and not only.
    In the setting of Decima Malafede Nature Reserve, the whole day will be dedicated to the promotion of the quality products of the protected areas with tasting activities, workshops, guided visits, the presentation of the brand "Natura in Campo" and a fair dedicated to the organic producers of the Capital. For children, "open day" in the Educational Farmstead.
    The event "Autunno in Riserva, i parchi a tavola" will start in the morning (from 10.00 a.m.) and will lead visitors to discover the rich heritage of culture, tastes, and traditions still surviving in the protected areas of Rome, till sunset.
    The event is promoted by RomaNatura, Ente Regionale per la Gestione del Sistema delle Aree Naturali Protette nel Comune di Roma.
