Works of art: symbols of faith
|
Ilario Fioravanti
Cesena, the most veracious heart of Romagna, could not be neglected. A tabernacle walled up the wall of the Basilica facing Ricasoli square shelters a bronze statue representing the Madonna col Bambino (1996). It was made by Ilario Fioravanti, sculptor born in Cesena: one of the greatest contemporary artists in Romagna. He has also made the aedicle (maestà) at Nocicchio, sheltering the Madonna della Misericordia (1997).

Amilcar Zannoni: a sculptor
Among the contemporary artists born at San Piero, Amilcar Zannoni (1922) is worth a mention. His family moved to Moutiers (Lorraine) when he was still a child. In France his sculp-tures and steel creations made him famous. Some of his works were presented to his birth place and are now on exhibit at the Captains Palace.

Works of art and faith
Many painted or sculpted images made by lesser artists might pass under silence, but thanks to miraculous events reported by documents, or simply tenaciously handed down in local tales, they are certainly charming. Some works of art in the churches of the upper Savio gave origin to intense popular devotion that increased their beauty and value.

The Crocifisso del Soccorso is worshipped in the parish church of St Pietro in Vinculis at San Piero in Bagno. It was painted by an anonymous artist from Bologna (c. 1510) and kept in the church of Santissima Annunziata, now destroyed. Until the eighteenth century it was particularly invoked in case of earthquakes. The feast is celebrated on the first Sunday of July; on that occasion the Crucifix is carried along the roads of the village. |
In the Basilica of St Santa Maria Assunta at Bagno di Romagna, inside a chapel, an altarpiece - with golden part, painted on timber and prepared in a workshop at Florence (1695) - is a rare fifteenth century xylograph entitled Madonna del Sangue (before 1498). The image is intensely worshipped after a miracle took place on 21 January, 1498. It was kept in a private house and one day, when people were gathered in prayer, the image shed tears of blood inviting to establish a rec-onciliation among the inhabitants of the village.

The Madonna of Corzano is inside the pretty Sanctuary built on Corzano hilltop and former massive rock of Counts Guidi (14th cent.). The image represents the Madonna col Bambino e Santa Caterina dAlessandria (c. 1430), painted by a late gothic artist from Romagna. |
According to file information, the devotion paid to this image started in the seventeenth century; yet, some ex-voto kept in the Sanctuary date back to the previous century or even earlier. The devotion is still present today, as revealed by the two feasts celebrated in the Sanctuary: the first Sunday after Easter, and the last Sunday in August.
