The territory has historically been crossed by pilgrims, merchants and armies. Also exchanges and meetings among people and cultures influenced the area. Here people from Umbria, Romans, feudatories, monks and grand dukes followed one another. For this reason Romagna and Tuscan elements can be found almost everywhere in the area: in the dialect spoken; in architecture styles of the remotest houses in the country or in the villages; in the road organisation; in the many works of art adorning the churches.
