The temptations of the bath "without underpants"
The promiscuity of the baths led to temptations and obscene thoughts: in 1216 the monks from Vallombrosa who wanted to treat their rheumatisms at Bagno di Romagna needed a special authorization of the abbot.
Only in 1558 did the Community Statutes forbid to men and women to take a bath without underpants during the day and they also provided that every woman for decency reasons, could take a bath all alone if she asked for it.

A legend worthy of the brothers Grimm
In 542 A.D. Bagno was destroyed by Totila and even the hot water spring was forgotten. According to a legend, in the 12th century, Agnese, a 14-year old girl from Sarsina, found the hot water spring.
She was Christian and had to hide her religious faith. Her family turned her out because she refused to marry a pagan her father had chosen for her. Suffering from leprosy, she took to an almost inaccessible area close to Bagno, in the company of a little dog.
One day the dog was digging a hole in the ground and found a spring of healing water: Agnese washed with it and was cured of her horrible illness. Then she retired to a convent where she spent a saintly life.
According to a different version of the legend, her father turned out Agnese because she was a Christian and was left with two thugs who would kill her. Yet, the two men had pity on the young girl, killed a lamb instead of her, stained her clothes with its blood and brought them to Agneses father.
Anyway, whatever the real story may be, Agnese has always been venerated at Bagno di Romagna.
