Riserva Naturale Orientata Cavagrande del Cassibile

Along the banks of the river, for some meters, you will have the opportunity to get surrounded by the coolness of the riparian wood where Mediterranean Willows, White and Black Poplars, French Tamarisks, and Raywood Ashes grow together the wonderful Oriental Planetree, whose most ancient specimens have trunks with a diameter of about one meter and a half.

Flora

Oriental Planetree

It is a tree with deciduous leaves living in south-eastern Europe and in western Asia. It has a particularly important ecological value in the karstic caves of Siracusa, since they represent the westernmost border of its distribution range; this means that west to this territory, Oriental Planetrees do no longer spontaneously grow.

Fauna

The undergrowth is populated by the Sardinian Warbler, a characteristic small bird of the Mediterranean maquis. In the sky of the valley of Cassibile it is possible to sight the Peregrine or admire the hunting technique of the Kestrel; moreover, we can also sight the silhouette of the Lanner Falcon, hanging in the air with its open wings.
